How does our work help you?
The secular character of our government has been dangerously undermined in recent decades by:
- the creation of the faith-based initiatives program
- proselytizing in the U.S. military
- exemptions in child safety laws that permit religious groups and individuals to disregard the health and safety of children
- religious distortion of sex education in the public schools
When our secular heritage is threatened by initatives like these and others, average Americans are directly harmed.
The task of the Secular Coalition for America is national advocacy. We believe that nontheistic Americans have an obligation to speak out whenever injustices threaten our nation’s secular heritage. Thus, we speak out on public policy on your behalf – in Washington DC, and to the citizens of the United States. Click here for a list of the issues on which we lobby.
The Secular Coalition for America makes hundreds of lobby visits each year with members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, in addition to meeting with Administration officials, as well as with the staff of these officeholders.
The Secular Coalition helps raise our profile as a movement. We work to alert citizens to policy injustices, and this helps strengthen our hand in Washington.
While the Secular Coalition respects every American’s right to hold whatever beliefs they wish, we cannot sit by when there are attempts to use the power of the state to impose the theology of some on the rest of us.
Although we rely on donations from individuals to make our work possible, the Coalition is not an individual membership organization. To join a national or local group, subscribe to publications, or receive information about atheism, humanism, freethought, the secular student movement, or opportunities for nontheistic military personnel, please visit the websites of our member organizations and those of our endorsing organizations.
